Initiative

Initiative

5 of 10

Initiation is creativity, inventiveness, originality, ingenuity, imagination. Every time you respond in class, every time you choose your own research topic, every time you put together your own interpretation of a piece of literature, you take initiative. And future employers value can-do professionals who come up with new ideas and chart their own course through projects, employees who are self-reliant. Self-reliant people are self-starters who don’t procrastinate on getting the job done. They know what is required to do and do it. They don’t wait to be told many times. Succeeding high school, college, and the career world is taking the initiative.

5 Tips for Success

5 Tips for Success

Tips 3-4

Tip 3: Do Research

Literary critics have written vast numbers of analytical and critical pieces on countless books. If you’re having trouble understanding a particular text, do some research and see what knowledgeable sources have to say about it. In addition to increasing your comprehension, you’ll also be showing initiative, something teachers always like to see. Always use legitimate and scholarly sources, not condensed study guides. Going the extra mile in your research elevates your achievement ten-fold.

Tip 4: Use a Dictionary

Make sure you have access to a dictionary when you’re reading. You can often figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word by using context clues, but sometimes you can’t. Rather than simply skipping over the words you don’t know, take the time to look them up. The results are well worth the effort. Your comprehension will increase greatly, and you’ll build your vocabulary at the same time.

Selecting Your Courses Part 3

Selecting Your Courses

Part 3

Science

Science teaches you to think analytically and apply theories to reality. Colleges want to see that you’ve taken at least three years of laboratory science classes. A good combination includes two semesters of each of the following sciences:

·         Biology

·         Chemistry or physics

·         Earth/space science

More competitive schools expect you to take four years of lab science courses. You can add two semesters in one of the following subjects:

·         Chemistry or physics(the science you didn’t already study)

·         Advanced biology

·         Advanced chemistry

·         Advanced physics

Student Success Statement

“A man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder.”

-Thomas Carlyle

I agree with this quote because if a ship doesn’t have a rudder it can’t go where it pleases. It will end up perhaps somewhere that was not intended. But if it does have a rudder it can go anywhere, just like a person with a goal, they can achieve anything as long as they set their minds on it.

Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement

“Success is dependent on effort.”

-Sophocles, Greek dramatist

I agree with this quote, hard work definitely pays off. One good example is a student’s grades. If a student works hard and puts in a lot of effort, they will get good grades.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Students

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens

By Sean Covey

For teens, life is not a playground, it’s a jungle. And, being the parent of a teenager isn’t any walk in the park, either. In his book, The 7 Habits of Effective teens, author Sean Covey attempts to provide “a compass to help teens and their parents navigate the problems they encounter daily.”

How will they deal with peer pressure? Motivation? Success or lack thereof? The life of a teenager is full of tough issues and life-changing decisions. As a parent, you are responsible t help them learn the principles and ethics that will help them to reach their goals and live a successful life.

While it’s all well and good to tell kids how to live their lives, “teens watch what you do more than they listen to what you say,” Covey says. So practice what you preach. Your example can be very influential.

Covey himself has done well by following a parent’s example. His dad, Stephen Covey, wrote the book The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, which sold over 15 million copies. Sean’s a chip off the old block, and no slacker. His own book has rung in a more than respectable 2 million copies sold here are his seven habits, and some ideas for helping your teen understand and apply them:
